Martin Puryear

Martin Puryear is an scultpor born in the early 1940's in Washington D.C. He learned the craft of furniture making as well as crafting other everyday objects. He went on to earn his BA from Catholic University in Washington D.C, studied at the Swedish Royal Academy of Arts, and earned his MFA at Yale University. He's often referred to as being a formalist. He is a sculptor working in the medium of wood, tar, metal, and other alternative materials.

I really like this first image mostly because of it's shape. It's structure looks very light being basically hollow, but with the material i can't imagine that it is actually as light as a believe it to be. I also like the symmetry of the form, it's very organic and almost shell-like.

This sculpture again looks a lot like a shell to me, but more like a modern art-type shell. The pieces of wood are still squared off at some ends which, to me, stops the organic flow of the shape, though doesn't diminish anything from the work. It almost seems like it could tip over or start wobbling at any moment, which kind of gives me an uneasy feeling about it, but that is also what makes me like it more.
